Why You Should Never Discuss Your Hand | Poker Tutorials

The last piece of poker etiquette is a very important one and it has to do with when you're not in the pot at all. So all this action goes on, we see a flop, somebody bets, I don't want to continue with the hand so I muck my cards, the action goes, and then the turn card appears and I go "ohhh! Unbelievable!", where I'm clearly indicating to the table that that card would have been a valuable one for me because my hand would have improved. You see people do this so regularly at the table pre-flop when they muck two cards that were not a playable hand and then they look at the flop and they see that they would have connected. They would have made two pair, or they would have made a flush, or a straight, or trips, or full house, or whatever strong hand they would have made if they played, but they didn't. They're reacting behaviorally at the table. That gives other players information about the hand. Often it can be very key information. Giving away information about the hand while it's still going on, especially when you're not in the hand is some of the worst poker etiquette that you can have at the table. Even worse than that is actually talking about the cards that you folded. So instead of just signing and reacting that you would have improved your hand, actually talking about it is so much worse. People regularly whisper at the table whisper like "I folded two clubs". Oh, loud. Because they're not in the hand so they don't have any vested interest in protecting the secret of their cards. If they were in the hand, obviously they would shut up about it but they're not in the hand. So they're choosing to be disrespectful to the other players that are in the hand, and potentially giving an information edge to one or all of those players in the pot. If somebody's seated next to that's in the hand, they might hear the whisper while someone might not. That's unfair because it's a disadvantage to some of the players at the table. When you fold a hand and you're no longer involved in the action, do not talk about the hand while it's going on. It doesn't matter what you folded. It doesn't matter that you were or were not in the pot. None of that matters. While a hand is going on, don't discuss it. That's the best policy you can possibly have from a poker etiquette standpoint.

I Am Sick And Tired Of Poker Players Who Do This

14:13
I'm going to be serious for a moment here, because I want to discuss an issue that has a major negative impact on televised poker shows. This has been a huge annoyance to me, as I have appeared on many of these shows and had my games affected by this. It's also awful for fans, who just want to watch their favorite players and get the shows that they were promised. Check out Poker After Dark and other shows on PokerGo: https://www.pokergo.com Subscribe for more wsop vlog, news, comedy, and hand breakdowns. Poker Hands is the show where Doug analyzes live poker hands from tv poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Fedor Holz, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu.

Poker Fails - The Worst Fails Players Ever Made In Pro Poker

05:51
The ultimate list of pro poker fails See more from us over at GoWin: https://www.gowin.co.uk/blog/ Poker is a game that requires extreme concentration, a sharp memory and honed bluffing skills to get ahead of the competition. In these next 5 videos, we’ll see absolutely none of that, as we take a look at the 5 stupidest fails ever seen in pro poker. Baumann vs Balkin - You Lost Bro Players Baumann and Balkin find themselves in a neck and neck game, which was so close that apparently both players couldn’t decide on who’d lost. In an embarrassing move, Balkin gets up to celebrate a little too fast, heading over to his supporting friends, who don’t hesitate to tell him to sit right back down. Schwartz vs Butteroni - Schwartz’s Ill-Advised Tips At the 2015 World Series Poker event, Schwartz was taken to task over giving player Butteroni some tips on how to play; whilst Butteroni was in a separate game against Negreanu. Because of his interference, the hand was dismissed and both players lost on the chance to win the pot. In a later hand, Schwartz gives Butteroni a little more advice, calling time on Butteroni after only 2 minutes. What started as a petty payback for Schwartz, becomes one of the most awkward minutes in poker history, where the entire table turns against him and lets him know he’s wrong in the most passive aggressive way possible. Tony G vs Hellmuth - Hellmuth Finds Out About Bluffing Etiquette and competition come to a head in this hand between players Tony G and Hellmuth. When Hellmuth temporarily forgets that a big part of playing poker is: bluffing. After Tony G tells Hellmuth that he hasn’t looked at his cards and is playing a blind game, Hellmuth takes that as a good sign he’ll win the hand, only to be informed when he loses, that... Hellmuth doesn’t take the news well, and is incredibly offended that he’s been lied to. Hopefully, it’ll teach Hellmuth a thing or two about taking people’s words at face value next time he plays a game where lying convincingly is often the key to success. Alfredo vs Vincente - Double Fail Ends In A Twist In this utterly stupid game of poker, player Vincente gets the fails off to a good start by not paying attention to the game and mucking his cards early. Apparently he thought everyone else has already folded. Upon realising that his competitor Alfredo hasn’t left the game yet, he goes back on that decision having already revealed his cards to the table. Alfredo looks set to win the game, having all the information he needs to make the perfect play, yet shocks us by one upping the earlier fail as he goes all in with a hand that has a 0% chance of winning. Apparently his memory isn’t as sharp as it once was. MoneyMaker vs Pellegrino - I Thought It Was Your Turn In one of the most confusing hands in a poker tournament, Chris MoneyMaker is waiting for his opponent Pellegrino to call his hand. During this time he goes for a stroll, chats to the camera guy and fidgets with his chips, before sadly informing Pellegrino that he has to call time on him, only to discover it’s been his play all along. Pellegrino had already made his play 5 minutes ago and had been patiently waiting for MoneyMaker to get on with his turn. It was worth the wait in the end, as MoneyMaker goes all in and takes the pot. That’s all from us for today. We post a new video here every single week, so if you want to see more of the most ridiculous, funniest and stupidest things in the gambling world, then check back in with GoWin for our next release. Poker Hands - James Obst Folds a FLUSH in the 2016 WSOP Main Event

11:33
James Obst has made some very interesting plays in the 2016 World Series of Poker Main Event. On a previous episode of Poker Hands, Doug was critical of Obst's decision making in a hand in which he folded a full house. This time, James is is throwing a queen-high flush into the muck. Will Doug approve this time? It's hard to make it to the 2016 WSOP Main Event Final Table when you aren't showing down strong hands. Even great players like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Dan Colman, Phil Hellmuth, and Tom Dwan need to make big hands once in a while. Then again, only a handful of players remain, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Some players elect to preserve their tournament life at all costs. Poker Hands is a weekly show in which Doug analyzes live poker hands from TV poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). Poker Rule #1: To Win, Don't Privilege Your Gut Instincts | Poker Champ Liv Boeree

04:17
Want to win at poker? First, understand how your mind works. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Nobel-Prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman explains the mind’s two thinking systems: System 1 which “is the brain’s fast, automatic, intuitive approach,” and System 2 which is “the mind’s slower, analytical mode, where reason dominates.” Champion poker player Liv Boeree explains that if you want to rake in the chips, you’ll need to harness both these systems. The game requires players to make decisions in circumstances of great uncertainty, so learn to balance your mathematical reasoning with your gut instincts—however, when those two systems give you strongly conflicting messages, Boeree says the win is usually based in logic, not intuition. Your gut is valuable, and can often be the key to reading a tell or bluff, but it “isn’t as reliable as you think." Find out more at http://www.livboeree.com. Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/liv-boeree-to-win-at-poker-treat-it-like-a-science Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: So I guess the thing you have to think about in any given poker situation is that you're dealing with a lot of uncertainty, and it's all about how to make the best decision in any given moment. So the first rule of thumb is how to extract the most money or chips from your opponent when you have a strong hand, and how to lose the minimum when you have a weak hand. And you're never going to be a hundred percent certain where you are: Are you beating them or do you have a worse hand? So you have to sort of construct a strategy that is mathematically optimal in each situation. Well, I guess people tend to think of intuition as their gut instinct and my rule of thumb in poker is to only fall on my gut instinct if my sort of logical, my slow brain, the system two as it's sometimes called, has not come to any conclusive answer. A lot of people are tempted to go, “This is too tricky, I don't know!” and then go, “Yeah, well, my gut instinct says this; I'm going to go with that.” But the best thing to do is to work with both, your sort of slow brain and that gut. Say you were playing against your opponent and you've noticed that actually they’re someone who's very solid, they never seem to bluff, and you might have a hand that you would normally call with (say 90 percent of the time), but you know this guy, he's just never bluffing, never doing it. Well, actually this might be one of those rare situations where you do throw your hand in the muck, where you have a very strong feeling that you're just not calling; even though mathematically it says it should call, you shouldn't do it. I guess the art part of poker is when you have these flashes of inspiration where you need to deviate from the math, and the science is knowing whether that deviation is the right thing to do at the time. When it comes to your intuition as a poker player I would say do use it from time to time, but it should not be your starting point. You, as a rule of thumb, should always go for the slow “system two” analysis, see what answer that comes up with, and then also to check in with your gut. Say you're in a really big hand, and your opponent has bet, often I'll have an instinctive response; I'll be like, “Oh that's a bluff,” or “they have a really strong hand,” and I'll make a note of it, I won't just go with that answer. I'll go, “Okay now let's work through the mathematics, let's look sort of through all the other bits of information: what have they done on other cards?” and so on, and then see if those two answers match up.” Now, if they both match up, great, I've got an easy decision, but if one is giving a conflicting answer to the other, then usually you tend to rely on the sort of the mathematic/logic part. However, it's really, really close with the mathematics, then I'll fall back on that gut instinct. But as a rule of thumb your gut is not as reliable as you think. You often see these like memes on the Internet, which is just like, “Always go with your gut! Trust your instincts!” and so on. And I personally think that's a copout. I think that's often the lazy way out for when we are faced with a really tough decision in life, of just going, “well… answer X.” Our brains they love to simplify things, to do things in black-and-white, but we live in a very complex world, and that's not always the best route to take. So in a nutshell, your gut instincts can be useful, but as a last resort. We've evolved of these amazing brains for a reason, so we should be using them.

You may be familiar with some of these poker controversies, but aside from the fact that it is funny and entertaining to watch them, it’s a great lesson to all us poker players. This video with some of the known poker controversy and poker etiquette is a great way to know how to deal with these kind of situations if they would happen to us, and maybe know the rules a bit better so we won’t make some poker mistakes as well that can cost us a lot of chips. The video contains a lot of poker pros involved in this poker controversy situation like Patrik Antonius, Phil Hellmuth, Gaelle Baumann and others. On Poker Etiquette (Hellmuth vs. Tony G & Bellande)

13:35
Just want to make something clear: when I'm playing live and I bluff the river, I'll say '9 high' or whatever I have. If my opponent flips the winner that's of course a friendly showdown and I'm not saying otherwise (if I'm the caller I always immediately show if my opponent announces a bluff). And it's quicker than flipping your hand up and having the other person to figure out what it is. But if he doesn't show his hand straight away I'll either muck my hand or show it if I was curious to see what the caller had. This also prevents slow-rolls which are extremely bad taste. If you have the nuts or a super strong hand, show your hand immediately! Anyway I like how Hellmuth makes a massive fuss about someone lying and about a silly showdown situation while blanketing them under "poker etiquette." Phil, I'm pretty sure that swearing and berating opponents and very frequently acting anti-social and mean-spirited is more of a serious ethical problem. Forgot to add that if both throw their hand in the muck (it's mostly fine in cash games), it can be a little farcical. Because now it opens up the door to easy collusion, and you've deprived live audiences (especially non-televised) of the most interesting part of the hand, which is who had what at showdown. But it's still better than just the winning hand having to show like I explained in the video. Please can we just wake up and erase this whole bad stigma thing when it comes to wanting a hand to be shown? There shouldn't be a stigma. Therefore the proper etiquette should just be for the bluffer to show, that way no one has to ask to see it, and the winning hand takes it down quickly without these constant hold ups. By refusing to show you're displaying an egocentric agenda. You were called, you lost, show some dignity instead of trying to get away with making the losing play and trying to get rewarded for it. The person who makes the good call should get rewarded and everyone at the table deserves to see your hand because you took it to showdown. This is NOT rubbing it in, like a slow-roll does. Stop having a whinge - if you think showing your losing hand makes you feel violated...please find another game where, you know, the object ISN'T to take as much of everyone's money/chips as possible. Excuse my frustration; I just have had this argument for way too many hours of my life and it just seems very straight forward of an issue.

Poker has exploded in past few years since they started to air some big tournaments on TV and I won't deny the hype of it because I've played a fair amount myself with friends and online. It's been a while since the last time I've played and I was an average player at best, so I've decided to step my game up. More specifically I will be focusing on Texas Hold'em. I'm going to do some research to become a better poker player and share it here on the Tastefully Driven Blog. For all you beginners or those interested in getting started with Texas Hold'em poker I hope you will join me to become better poker players. Before we get started with how to play Texas Hold'em Poker, I'm going to go over some definitions: Blinds - A blind wager for the pot. First two players left of the dealer in Texas Hold'em need to post blinds, small blind and big blind going to the left. Big blind is usually the minimum bet and the small blind is the half that. Call - A call is to continue hand by matching another player's bet Raise - A Raise is to up the bet Fold - A fold is to discontinue your current hand also known as a muck. Check - A check is when you pass on betting on your turn and if no one has placed a bet before you. To start I'm going to go through the basics of Texas Hold'em. First there is a designated dealer and the 2 players to the left post their blinds. The first player to the left is the small blind and second player is the big blind. Next every player up to 10 players are dealt 2 cards face down, also known as the "hole" cards. The first round of betting starts with the player left of the big blind to call, raise, or fold and betting ends with the big blind. When the first round of betting has been completed the FLOP comes next. After one burn card that is left face down 3 cards are dealt face up as community cards. After the flop, the player left of the dealer can either check or bet to start another round of betting. After the second round betting is completed another burn card is dealt and another community card is dealt face up called the turn card. Another round of betting starts with the player left of the dealer. When that round of betting is completed there is one more burn card then the last community card called the river is dealt. Now the final round of betting starts with the player left the dealer. After all betting is completed players show their cards and the player with the top 5 card poker hand wins the pot using their hole cards and 3 community cards. Simple enough right, here's the quick and dirty of Texas Hold'em: 1. Small and big blinds posted to the pot 2. 2 cards dealt to every player 3. First round of betting 4. 1 Burn card 5. The Flop - 3 community cards 6. Second round of betting 7. 1 Burn card 8. The Turn - 1 community card 9. Third round of betting 10. 1 Burn card 11. The River - 1 community card 12. Final round of betting 13. Player with best 5 card poker hand wins the pot That's Texas Hold'em rolled up in a tight ball and I hope you will stayed tuned and join me on my journey to become a better Texas Hold'em player. I've also put together a video below of a sample game of Texas Hold'em. If there's anything that I have wrong please leave comment or contact me at mike @ tastefullydriven . com, I know this may not be perfect. Lastly go check out the Tastefully Driven Games Store http://www.tastefullydriven.com/Games-S4 for your poker supply needs like plastic playing cards and poker chip sets.

The ability to bluff, fire at a pot and make your opponent think twice or more before he calls you or re-raises you and better yet folds the better hand, is saved to the greats and pros of poker. In this classic hand, we bring you one of the best Phil Ivey bluffs that were ever televised, a real master player for a $1 million tournament prize. Sure, it’s not a new hand, it’s not that recent, but it’s poker at its best with the one of the best Phil Ivey bluffs, but that’s not the interesting part of this hand. In this hand, both players try to bluff each other at the pot, and so we get a bluffing war between two players, heads-up for the big prize. It’s like “chicken” of poker you may say. Watch this great classic hand between Ivey vs Jackson and think if you would have done the same or folded the hand. This is really one of the best mind-games between the two players and without a doubt one of the best Phil Ivey bluffs ever seen, which makes it such a memorable hand we had to share it on our View on Poker channel again. For more great, entertaining and funny poker videos, please like our videos and subscribe to our channel. Comment below and let us know your thoughts and insights of the hand and about bluffing in general. Have a great day!

Poker Tips for Beginners Covering Tournament Poker ...

01:51
From http://www.GamblersTelevision.com and search Poker for more lessons. Learn Poker tips for beginners with these series of instructional videos by Tony T. This edition covers a how to for tournament poker and discusses proper table manners for a beginning player. Remember to search our website at http://GamblerTelevision.com and enter the keyword Poker to find additional videos for novices. Also protect your hand by looking at your cards like this (DEMO). Some players will try and peek at your hand if you are too careless giving them an advantage over you. I have seen many new players mistakenly expose their hand to neighbors and some ironically like to pick up their cards up in the air in this manner. Always place a chip or chip protector on your cards. When you are in seat 1 or 10 this keeps the dealer from throwing your hand in the muck by mistake. If an opponent folds and their cards touches your cards and it's unprotected most establishments will force you to fold. For this reason you should always protect your hand even if you are seated in seats 2-9.
